What is integrative health coaching?

“If I really want to improve my situation, I can work on the one thing over which I have control, myself.”       From Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

Here's a familiar story: You go to your doctor for your annual physical and realize that your health could use a little (or a lot) of tweaking.  Some form of stress reduction, eating better and weight loss are discussed.  You promise to make some changes, but within a week, are back to your old habits.  It's not your fault, you really would like to make some changes, but life gets in the way and before you know it, that treadmill is gathering dust, you are eating out every night and finding a minute for yourself is just too difficult.

An integrative health coach (IHC) is your partner on a journey to discover a more fulfilling and satisfying lifestyle.  Whether you are looking to lose weight, exercise more, decrease stress or find more balance in your life, an IHC can help.  Developed by Duke Integrative Medicine, IHCs are experts in behavior change and work to explore your vision of optimal health utilizing a whole person approach.  As you can see on the wheel of health, wellness is not just diet and exercise, but a dynamic world of interconnectedness.

We help to identify where you currently are and where you would like to be.  Then we work together to find a way to close the gap, thus creating new habits that are healthy, meaningful and sustainable.  We take the time to listen and to ask powerful questions that help motivate change.  We look to connect the dots, so that you can deeply understand the interconnectedness of everything you do, and also make connections between your actions and your values.

In short, we are your champion as you forge new trails of wellness in your life.

Why Integrative Health Coaching?

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." - Albert Einstein

Old habits die hard.  When you do the same things every day, you begin to wear a trail through the woods of life.  Over time, you may realize that your trail isn’t leading you where you want to be, or perhaps there is an easier, more direct route you could take.  Stepping off that trail and attempting to make a new one isn’t easy.  The old trail is worn down and you know every step of the way.  A new trail might be full of weeds, downed trees and other obstacles.  But by making small, repetitive steps, keeping in mind your overall goal, you can eventually create a new trail.  The old trail will slowly become overgrown and the new trail you have forged will be easier each time you walk down it.

As your health coach, I’ll help you to see the whole woods, allow you to step back and examine if where you have been walking is really where you want to go.  Then we’ll work to start that new trail, keeping your overall vision in mind so you don’t get lost in the weeds.  It will be work, but as many people have said in the past, anything worth having is worth fighting for.

GROUP WORKSHOPS - DIABETES
I have been trained by the Blueprint for Health in the state of Vermont to lead a series of “Healthier Living Workshops” focusing on diabetes.  These six week workshops are offered for FREE through the healthcare reform in Vermont.  Much of the material is similar to what I do as a health coach, although the sessions are scripted according to a Stanford study, so I am unable to bring in some of my personal coaching experience.  There is also much more education involved in these sessions.  These workshops are a great way to get started on your path.  If you or a loved one are affected by diabetes, please contact me for more information and to get a group started in your area, it's free for you!

TRAUMA HEALING INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS
I am in the midst of a three year training to become a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner.  This intriguing mind-body therapy is used to help regulate the nervous system in the treatment for overwhelming life events.
When someone experiences a traumatic event (anything from war crimes to car accidents to knee surgery) the body can store the event in the form of a dysregulated nervous system and muscle tension, which in turn, can lead to physical symptoms.  This therapy works to return equilibrium to the nervous system.
One of the most interesting aspects of SE work for me has been helping people work through accidents and surgeries.  If you are experiencing whiplash that won’t go away, panicked feelings when cars get too close, muscle tension or other unexplained symptoms after a surgery, please don’t hesitate to contact me to see if Somatic Experiencing® sessions could help.
Fees for 60 minutes session is discounted from $75 to $40 while I am finishing my training.

SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS

I am passionate about helping people live up to their full potential and finding balance in their lives.  I also love being a part of the transformation of health care, both in my own state of Vermont and through witnessing the change at Duke Integrative Medicine.  I truly believe we are on the verge of redefining health care into more of prevention and wellness rather than solely treatment of disease.  I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience and would be available to speak to doctor’s offices, work places or to anyone that is interested in learning how health coaching could benefit them or their office.
